STAR WARS: FORCE FOR CHANGE CELEBRATES 1 MILLION FOOD PACKETS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

This month, Lucasfilm and U.S. Fund for UNICEF celebrate a remarkable milestone: over one million ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) packets distributed to malnourished children around the world! Thanks to Star Wars: Force for Change and UNICEF Kid Power, thousands of malnourished children have benefited from the provision of RUTF packets through UNICEF nutrition programs in Uganda, Haiti and Burkina Faso.

Since early 2015, Star Wars: Force for Change has been joining forces with UNICEF Kid Power to help fight global malnutrition by bringing UNICEF Kid Power to schools across the United States. By getting active with the UNICEF Kid Power Band, kids earn Kid Power Points to unlock funding that allows UNICEF to deliver RUTF packets to malnourished children around the world.

The UNICEF Kid Power school program has expanded to 13 cities across the country this year. There are now more than 70,000 elementary school children getting active, saving lives and learning about the importance of global citizenship! Families can also join the UNICEF Kid Power team at home, thanks to the successful national retail launch of Kid Power Bands on Target.com.

To date, over 700,000 RUTF packets have been distributed throughout Uganda alone, reaching over 5,000 children with severe acute malnutrition. Each RUTF packet is part of a life-saving intervention that is essential to a malnourished child’s survival, growth, and development.

As March 2016 — “UNICEF Kid Power Month” — comes to a close, we can feel good about our role in satisfying one of UNICEF’s key missions: to reduce child mortality. And not by just a little bit — by 1 million food packets. That’s enough to save the lives of more than 6,665 kids.
